Ii. Poliomyelitic Virus in Urban Sewage
نویسندگان
چکیده
In two out of three large urban epidemics of poliomyelitis the virus of this disease has been detected in samples of sewage. From one of the sites it was found repeatedly. Both positive sites were located in the vicinity of isolation hospitals, and we believe that the findings indicate that this virus can be transported, for short distances at least, through the medium of flowing sewage.

Molecular Detection of Hepatitis A Virus in Urban Sewage in Isfahan, Iran
ABSTRACT Background and Objectives: Hepatitis A virus (HAV) enters sewage through the stool of infected patients and contaminates freshwater and seawater. The aim of present study was quantitative molecular detection of HAV in raw and treated urban sewage samples from Isfahan, center of Iran. &nbs...
متن کاملIii. Method for Detecting Poliomyelitic Virus in Sewage and Stools
1. The active agent in sewage and aqueous suspensions of human stools, capable of producing poliomyelitis in rhesus monkeys after intraperitoneal inoculation, can be precipitated by 50 per cent saturation with ammonium sulfate, and no loss of activity seems to occur during this procedure. 2. The precipitated virus is not consistently "redissolvable" in water. 3. By precipitation and subsequent ...
متن کاملPeriodic Examination of Sewage for the Virus of Poliomyelitis
From a series of tests covering 15 months, another instance is recorded of the detection of the virus of poliomyelitis in urban sewage. It has not yet been possible to detect the virus of poliomyelitis in sewage during non-epidemic periods. It is likely that the periodic sampling of sewage for pathogenic viruses or bacteria may be a method of epidemiological value.
متن کاملMolecular characterization of sewage-borne pathogens and detection of sewage markers in an urban stream in Caracas, Venezuela.
Molecular characterization of two sewage-borne pathogens identified hepatitis A virus (HAV) subgenotype IA and Giardia duodenalis assemblages A and B as predominant genotypes circulating in an urban area of Venezuela. This study reveals epidemiological features of human pathogens of worldwide distribution and the efficacy of molecular methods for accurate assessment of sewage pollution.
متن کاملAnalysis of the evolution in the circulation of HAV and HEV in eastern Spain by testing urban sewage samples.
The aim of the study was to analyse the evolution of the prevalence of HAV and HEV in the population of eastern Spain by analysing the viruses excreted in urban sewage. Raw urban sewage samples were collected and analysed during several years using RT-PCR techniques and sequencing analysis. Two limiting regions were analysed, one of them having implemented HAV vaccination programs. Acute sympto...
